Colombo, April 23 (Daily Mirror)- With the commissioning of the Uma Oya Hydro Power Plant tomorrow, 120 MW generation capacity will be added to the national grid and reduce the cost of energy, Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekara said today.
He said in a statement posted on X, that the project will also provide water requirements for drinking, agricultural and irrigational requirements for beneficiaries in three districts.
He also said the delays in the construction and commissioning of the hydro power plant due to various politically motivated protests is estimated to be a loss of Rs 9.8 Billion per annum to the CEB.
"The hydro power plant project was scheduled to be commissioned in December 2015," he added.
The project was officially launched in 2010, with an estimated cost of USD 514 million.
Private owned Power generation lots to blame Tuesday, 23 April 2024 11:22 PM
Private MiniHydro and rooftop solar are completely against government success with cheaper new power sources by CEB. Oya Hydro generation costs will be next to nothing then the amount government values the private generators supplied power will go down. Rooftop solar Mafia hold over government has to be ended with new large scale power plants.

The protests were all done by NPP, their destructive activities had caused the country to loose Billions of Dollars and the alleged money robbed by politicians is much less than the loss from destructive activities. Even if they come to power , the corruption by those in power will continue probably at a larger scale.

Have you thought about the environmental costs? Have you thoroughly studied the site Geology/ Geotechnical limitations so that the project does not becomes a failure like many others before it under Mahaweli Development? For Pete's sake do not think of the 10% cut!

Why not tell the public power plants do not operate at name plate capacity? Just because it has 120 MW, doesn't mean it will at least produce half of that.
