Ugandan born American Zohran Mamdani elected as the New York Mayor

In a milestone for representation and grassroots politics, Zohran Mamdani has been elected Mayor of New York City — becoming the first Ugandan-born American to lead the nation’s largest city. Mamdani, who previously represented Astoria in the New York State Assembly, centered his campaign on housing affordability, stronger public transit, and expanding social services, drawing strong support from working-class residents and young voters.

Mamdani was born in Kampala, Uganda, and immigrated to the U.S. as a child. The son of filmmaker Mira Nair and scholar Mahmood Mamdani, he grew up in New York public schools before attending NYU and working as a housing counselor. Those experiences shaped his political identity and his commitment to tenant protections.

“New York gave my family a home,” he said on election night. “My work now is to ensure this city remains a place where everyone can belong.”

His victory marks a new chapter in city leadership — one defined by multicultural identity, movement politics, and the voices of communities often left unheard. Whether he can translate this mandate into lasting change remains to be seen, but for many New Yorkers, his win signals hope.
