Colombo, Nov. 7 (Daily Mirror) - Sri Lanka has spent US $ 1.3 billion on vehicle imports by October 31, this year, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake said.

US$1.3 × 300 — all for the benefit of the top-tier business community. A 2012 Indian Maruti now costs nearly 3 million. For the average citizen who has long dreamed of owning even an old car, that dream is now almost impossible.

Recently I visited Sri Lanka and saw how traffic conditions have worsened everywhere. Before importing more vehicles, the government should prepare and implement a solution to ease traffic conditions. Country needs light railway public transport system and who will do it?

The dollars sent by blue collar workers spent on rupee rich sector (comprising urbanites, professionals, politicians etc.) who hardly contribute anything to the economy. Substantial section of this sector has become rupee rich by corruption

USD 1.3 billion was an utter waste of money. Instead of cars, they could have purchased 5 to 6 brand new Aur crafts to serve hot locations that would have earned the country double that money in 2 to 3 years. Now we have done junk plastic mixed cars that will be sitting in landfill in 2 to 3 years.
