The CMC in its current state, is totally ineffective like many other councils in the island. Colombo city and its surroundings are in an utter mess, disjointed planning, a poorly maintained road network, laughable traffic management system mostly malfunctioning traffic lights, non-existent pest control mechanisms, poor streetscaping, a road network in constant darkness, treeless streets, the list goes on. Most CMC maintained roads or streets in Colombo city have been mutilated and shoddily patched up for convenience, paying scant regard to its residents. They seem to be competing with the Sri Lankan cricket board for accolades for corruption and inefficiency and sadly, are only interested in the disproportionate perks they receive not by any desire to provide a good solid service to the tax paying residents. Desperately hoping for some change for the best.

The UNP lost badly because the previous Mayor was only interested in eating biscuit and cheese and wasting the rates collected and did not have the public day on Wednesdays with the senior staff where at least some of the public problems were solved. The new Mayor has to take action against the large amount of corruption to satisfy the residents.

This serves as a valuable lesson for the leadership of the United National Party (UNP) and its deeply compromised, corrupt members. Its long-standing leader, Ranil Wickremesinghe, has consistently evaded accountability for his numerous failures and appears determined to cling to party leadership until the very end of his political life. As the late S. L. Gunasekera aptly described in The Island, "Ranil is a serial loser"—a description that, regrettably, continues to hold true. In contrast, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, during his tenure as Defence Secretary, made remarkable strides in transforming and beautifying Colombo—achievements that the Colombo Municipal Council under UNP administration could only dream of. The contrast is stark. The UNP and its leadership ought to be ashamed.
