UNP Chairman MP Wajira Abeywardena expressed regret for the inconvenience caused to officials of the Ministry of Finance including the Secretary to the Treasury by what he called ‘the distortion of his statements made before the Parliamentary Select Committee’ by various social media platforms.
Issuing a statement, he said he made a number of statements on the situation the country was faced In 2022 on several occasions, but he never mentioned the names of any public official in any of those statements including those in the Ministry of Finance, and only drew attention to the mistakes committed by both statesmen and public officials, and did not make any comments which could cause hatred or dispute.
“I declare my deepest regret for the disruption caused by the distortion of my comments as circulating on various Facebook posts, which were made to achieve narrow minded political agendas. We can only learn lessons from the mistakes made in the past and ensure that the same is not repeated in future. I have made special reference to the statement made by President Ranil Wickremesinghe on April 8, 2022 before the Parliamentary Select Committee,” he said.
He said the posts on social media mentioning the names of several public officials including the name of the Secretary to the Treasury, have been made in order to create disharmony by distorting my statements.
“We need to steer the country on to the correct path, whilst taking consideration of the mistakes made in the past. It is regrettable that hatred is being spewed even on such a serious occasion,” he said.
