Feb 02 - The United Nations Human Rights office has urged the government to consider amending the controversial Online Safety Act to ensure it complies with human rights obligations.
The UN Human Rights said, "The new Online Safety Act will have far reaching negative implications for human rights, including freedom of expression," in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.
"We urge the Government to consider amending the law to address concerns of civil society and industry groups and ensure it complies with human rights obligations," the post also read.
The Act, which has been widely critized both locally and internationally, became law yesterday after it was endorsed by Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena.

Dictators never listen. They must be chased at an election or in an uprise. What UNHRO requests will not be complied by our Dictator. UNHRO must look for other ways to apply pressure for the President to succumb

The sad thing about Sri Lanka is that its politicians are resistant to advice, especially when it concerns the politicians' greedy selfishness and they fear for their sinecures. However, the UN is not able to enforce its demands, but the EU is, by canceling GPS in cases of human rights violations, which should finally happen. This would have a negative impact on my profit as an exporter, but forcing Sri Lanka to respect human rights would be worth it to me.

Even if all our donors decide to stop giving aid unless the Ranil rajapaksa criminal syndicate stop human rights abuse, this uncaring president will not stop.

Individuals who are not elected by the people always has poor or no leadership qualities. They always protect their own interests and will do anything to remain in power. UN need to arm the hand full of individuals who really wants to change the country. They're ready to exterminate the parasites.
