Two remand prisoners die after collapse during alleged escape attempt

Colombo, April 28 (Daily Mirror) - Two suspects who had been arrested and remanded on drug-related charges have died following a collapse during an incident at Magazine Prison yesterday (27).

According to the Prisons Department, the two individuals had attempted to escape from the facility at around 11 a.m. During the incident, a prison guard intervened and struggled with the suspects in an effort to prevent their escape. It was during this confrontation that the suspects reportedly collapsed.

Authorities stated that one suspect died at the scene, while the other, along with the prison officer involved, sustained injuries and was admitted for treatment. The second suspect later succumbed to injuries.

However, relatives of the deceased have raised concerns regarding the circumstances surrounding the deaths, alleging that the suspects may have been assaulted by prison officers.

The Police Media Spokesperson confirmed that an investigation has been launched into the incident. The Borella Police, together with the Prisons Department, are conducting further inquiries to determine the exact cause of death and the sequence of events leading up to the incident.
