CMC and UDA authorities should be held responsible for this unfortunate incident. The officials attached to these institutes should go around the Combo city to check these grown trees by road side n chop off the tall branches to relieve the weight to avoid falling on to the road. One other area is the Bullers road where trees appear overgrown n need pruning. Immediate action is to be taken to avoid deaths of innocent ppl.

Kusum sheni Friday, 06 October 2023 11:11 AM

    Fully agree

    Joseph Friday, 06 October 2023 11:16 AM

So what you are suggesting is that the CMC and UDA officials should go and shake the trees to ascertain if they are prone to be uprooted

Citizen of SL Friday, 06 October 2023 12:55 PM

    Fully agreed. CMC

None could be blamed, it is karmic effect. CTB should pay compensation to the dead and injured.

Rizvia moulana Friday, 06 October 2023 10:33 AM

The authorities concerned should be responsible. They turn a blind eye to complaints n unfortunately lives are lost. In front of my house a mighty kotamba tree has grown non of the authorities take responsibility to cut it down.

I agree with the above comments and Minister of transport must to something about these obstacles on the road and railway.. How many more to happen? A lots of trees near the railway tracks ? A lot or trees on the sides of roads . Many electric wires and polls are not protected on the both sides of roads Some bridges are old Some hazards on the roads in many places Bring some laws to save people from this kind of accidents

Do Local councils have Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Officers who conduct Risk Assessment regularly and maintain a check list?. If not, should we wait until 2048. Let's pray for those who lost their lives and injured.

    Roger D S Friday, 06 October 2023 11:29 AM

All trees must be regularly pruned

    Sakya Friday, 06 October 2023 11:31 AM

Very unfortunate deepest condolences to the families of the victims and wish speedy recovery for all those injured. In Melbourne Australia many streets are lined with huge trees but such tragedies never happen. Constant upkeep is the key trees are removed when the roots are weakened branches are pruned to maintain balance these are being consistently monitored. CMC makes enough money by taxing the citizens and maintain favourable budget but nothing much spent on upkeep of trees in public areas. These types of accidental incidents can easily be avoided.

    Liyanage Friday, 06 October 2023 11:31 AM

Its come out with the roots. No preventive measure at road construction and underground infrastructure,Roots are heavily damaged .

    ACL Friday, 06 October 2023 11:38 AM

That is why the Govt must inspected all overgrown trees and trim them. They always wait until the damage is done to react. Typical Govt!!!! I hope the Govt compensate their families for the tragic loss. Official can see trees stopping / leaning forward, wires hanging etc but they do NOT react until something tragic happens.

    T Bhavan Friday, 06 October 2023 12:51 PM

The tree has already lost its root system due to the close by construction of the building and road. This tree should have been removed well in advance

    DOT Friday, 06 October 2023 12:56 PM

This is a frequent news. Seems we never get a lesson from past!

Ron hardy Friday, 06 October 2023 12:56 PM

Sri Lankan roads are not safe not only by trees somany other hazards from pot holes to drainage systems no proper warning signs speed signs no overtaking double line road dividing lines etc.etc...you need to have a system to monitor hazards for public transport road safty crew to work on to keep everyone safe ...I agree with keeping all unsafe trees keeping safe accordingly due to heavy rain wind etc.

    Dee Friday, 06 October 2023 12:58 PM

Sad event. These trees should have been long years back( growing a replacement before doing so) It was more than 3 stories tall with little soil to hold the roots. But had it been cut down, comment’s would be- minister / mayor stole the tree, environment harmed etc.

    Mandayan Friday, 06 October 2023 01:00 PM

    Act of god!

    Concerned Friday, 06 October 2023 01:04 PM

KS, Karmic effect my foot! . 5 lives lost, 4 injured. 9 families devastated. Mind you this didn’t happen in a jungle. It happened in the heart of Colombo. Nobody responsible ?

    Amal Friday, 06 October 2023 01:07 PM

    Natural disaster in destroyed nature.

    Amal Friday, 06 October 2023 01:08 PM

    Natural desaster in destroyed nature

    Jayampathi Friday, 06 October 2023 01:09 PM

It is not a moving bus. It is stopped before the halt on the crossing. Sorry for the Poor passengers.

    Ram Friday, 06 October 2023 01:39 PM

Freak accident. Always it is the poor people who face these mishaps and the rogues live happily. My sympathies to the families of the deceased

    Ivan Friday, 06 October 2023 02:10 PM

This tragic incedent would have been avoided if the CMC

    Gaston Friday, 06 October 2023 03:07 PM

Now CMC will start massacring all the trees in the city. Usually, they dont use their brains. They font know what pruning means. They chop and all are cuts the butchers when they are in action.

    Aquarius Friday, 06 October 2023 03:16 PM

Generally, trees in urban areas have to be pruned and we don't see that happening in Sri Lanka. Of course there is plenty of "illicit pruning" of trees with the full support of MPs.

SRI LANKAN Modaya Friday, 06 October 2023 04:41 PM

    WHY NOT REPLANT THEM

    Paramanathan Friday, 06 October 2023 06:02 PM

Really unfortunate accident, as said UDA and the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) should be held accountable. CMC is so keen in collecting parking fees claiming every square inch within the city limits belonged to them. What the heck CMC was doing about trees pause danger to the public.

    Reza Friday, 06 October 2023 06:06 PM

Now the crooks will cut every single tree in Colombo and all other cities to steal the wood

    Gem Friday, 06 October 2023 06:34 PM

We had complained to the authorities to take down that tree for a long time. Due to somother reasons... They never took action... Sad

wickrama wijayasiri Friday, 06 October 2023 06:50 PM

it is the fault of the Ministry of environment. They should have stopped the excessive rainfall!

    Uali Friday, 06 October 2023 06:58 PM

No proper organisation,no one held for responsibility, this is not first or last and this is not natural disaster, it’s man made due to ignorance

GIA LANKA Saturday, 07 October 2023 02:44 AM

THIS TREE SHOULD HAVE FALLEN ON ONE OF THE CORRUPT LANKA POLITICIANS LUXRY CARS LIKE MERCEDES / LAND ROVER, TO KILL THE POLITICIAN HUTHIGAY PUTHAS

sekhar narayanan Saturday, 07 October 2023 10:27 AM

Avenue trees are very essential and should not be cut permanently . The authorities can check the trees especially the one which is 50 plus year old and do necessary pruning and give necessary support system to protect them. This incident was unfortunate.
