Train strike claims two lives, injures one

The abrupt trade union action by the railway trade unions on Tuesday night resulted in several unfortunate incidents where two commuters lost their lives and one sustained injuries after falling off the train.

Accordingly, an 18-year-old university student died after falling from the Colombo-bound Kandy train this morning at the Moragoda area in Gampaha. He fell while on the roof of the train.

According to railway sources, another person was injured after he fell from a train at the Bulugahagoda substation last evening (5.45 p.m.). It was reported that the person was admitted to hospital with minor injuries.

Meanwhile, another person died after falling from the train between Wellawatte and Bambalapitiya train stations on Tuesday (11), he was admitted to the Kalubowila hospital. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)

The current government must take responsibility for these tragedies. They have run the country to ground and squeezed the people so much with unbearable prices and taxes while keeping their incomes static or lower. TUs under these conditions naturally resort to TU action because that is what they are supposed to legitimately do. Unfortunately tragedies result.

The officers and the workers of the government railway are resorting to the trade union action so as win their demands. Whatsoever due to this abruptly action number of trains are not operated at schedule time chart. Furthermore the few trains which are operated are also jam- packed Therefore the commuters who wish to travel to their work places or any other needed destinations should use alternative transport services including either SLTB buses or the private buses it is much more convenient rather than travelling by the train. Further they can themselves prevent from the unwanted tragedies

It's terrible never ending stuff govments must take firm action against railway you fix it or privertise the dam thing forever something goes on with this important sector public suffering life's lost its crazy stuff country need decent educated work force far toomany cooks in every sector pay well for who deserve get rid off all unwanted time wasters and problem makers get people who can contribute to the countries economy if done the proper way all unnesory things can be resolved automatically

Allowing for people to go on roof is bad. Station Master cannot let people rid in dangerous way, which causes deaths. They must ensure all passengers are inside the train, and force those trying to ride in unsafe way off the train.

The driver of the train must take responsibility too. They should've asked those checking train at station if all passenger got on in safe way. Otherwise they must not drive the train. It is not at all fault of union that particular strike breaker driver allow for dangerous riding by dumb passenger.

Once before government want to up ticket price so trains become non-loss makers. As soon as prices made cost effective the bad behavior by passengers will go down.

Passengers take a risk by hanging out of the compartments,or seated on the roof, there are so many bridges, lamp,telephone, signal posts, just a knock would take away their lives. Only solution is employers should give accommodation to these travellers or give them leave till the train strike is over,government can gazetted compelling employers to grant pay leave, to the employees who could not report for work due to train strikes.
