Train strike claims life of engineer student

An engineer student attached to the Katubedda Technical college who was travelling on the roof of the Kandy-Colombo train died after falling off the train at Horape, the Railways Department said.

According to the police, the deceased was identified as W.W.I.D. Perera (18) from the Moragoda area in Gampaha.

A senior Railway Department official said an investigation is to be held into the death.

He said that it is believed the young man may have fallen after hitting a tree or a cable while on the roof of the train.

The official further said that people are using the train dangerously due to the limited services due to the strike by the train drivers this morning. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)

This is not either Bangalidesh or India where the trains are jam-packed with the passengers. But certain Srilankan persons who are believed themselves to be heroes are very carelessly perching on the rooftops on the trains are more often facing these types of tragic incidents

Not only the trains even you must see how people travel in the buses along the coastal line/Galle Road from especially from Colombo to Panadura route in the evenings after office hours - jam packed and on foot boards as well. The Minister of Transport should streamline the transportation facilities to extend a better service to the public without uttering gibberish like electric buses and new digital card systems without conductors like in Singapore

Travelling on train roofs very common in India, Bangladesh and Pakistan, your life is at risk when you travel on trains in this manner, not providing adequate trains compels passengers to travel on roofs, government and railway authorities to be blamed for not providing adequate trains. 75 years after independence, yet we could not improve train service to a good standard. Sad about the young engineering student losing life. Our deepest sympathies.
