Three policemen including two Police Sergeants and a Constable attached to the Welikada Police Station arrested over the death of Rajkumari, a housemaid who died after being arrested by the Welikada Police, were today ordered to be remanded till September 11 by the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court.
The victim, R. Rajkumari, a 42-year-old domestic worker at a popular teledrama producer and business personality Sudharma Nethicumara's home who was taken into Welikada Police custody over an alleged theft, died while undergoing treatment at the National Hospital in Colombo.
On a previous occasion, the CID arrested a Sub Inspector over the same incident and he was also ordered to be remanded till September 11 after being produced before Colombo Additional Magistrate Harshana Kekunawala.
The CID alleged that the first witness, the Sub Inspector, had been entrusted with the duty to keep the victim in police custody following her arrest. The CID said investigations have revealed she had been subjected to ill-treatment while being in police custody. The CID further alleged that Sub Inspector Ajith Kumara had taken steps to admit the deceased woman to the National Hospital, Colombo claiming that she was found in a street after falling and had been ignored.
In an affidavit, the husband of the deceased said the death of his wife R. Rajkumari was suspicious and demanded an independent investigation. (Lakmal Sooriyagoda)

It is truly disheartening to witness someone's passing. Let's ensure that these accused individuals are given a fair opportunity to explain what transpired. Those responsible must be held accountable. This incident can serve as a learning example for the entire police force. As Newton famously stated, 'Every action has an equal and opposite reaction,' echoing the principles of Lord Buddha's teachings on the Panathi Patha and the concept of karma. It is essential for the culprits and their associates to understand these principles now.

Nothing will happen. The victim is Tamil and the perpetrators are all Sinhalese. After sometime, all those arrested will be released based on inadequate evidence and the case will go on for 15y and die a natural death, because those who have to gather evidence are all Police and Sinhalese.

In the recent past I had to go to this police station for a personal matter. I was disgusted to enter the place as I felt it as a butchers' place due to this incident. I had no trust on the police officers working there due to possible killers in uniforms!

I too have similar sentiments about the police like Mr. Jaya Siri Perera. The truth will never be told, the husband of the victim will be silenced and the pressure taken off the case. This may look like a fiction. The murder may have taken place in the employer’s house. The police were given the task to coverup. The victim’s family applying pressure was not anticipated. The employer is a producer of tele dramas.

There is a likelihood of the four Policemen presently in custody being bailed out and later acquitted. That will be followed by them being promoted to the next higher rank. This is Sri Lanka.
