Three arrested for killing of wild elephant in Mihintale

Mihintale, Dec 18 (Daily Mirror)— Three individuals were arrested yesterday evening (17) by officers of the Mihintale Police in connection with the killing of a wild elephant in the Seeppukulama area.

The suspects, aged 42, 48, and 50, are residents of the same locality. They were taken into custody for allegedly setting fire to an injured wild elephant using burning torches. The suspects are due to be produced before the Anuradhapura Magistrate’s Court today (18).

According to wildlife officials, the elephant was found lying in a home garden at Seeppukulama and died after sustaining severe burn injuries. Investigations revealed that the animal had also suffered a gunshot wound to one of its forelimbs, which had left it immobilized.

Wildlife veterinary surgeons rushed to the scene and provided emergency treatment; however, despite their efforts, the elephant succumbed to its injuries. Officials believe the extensive burn wounds were the primary cause of death, though the exact cause will be confirmed following a postmortem examination.

A video of the brutal act, recorded by an eyewitness, was widely circulated on social media, prompting public outrage.
