Ten drivers test positive for drugs in Colombo

Colombo, Jan. 22 (Daily Mirror) - Deputy Minister of Transport and Highways Dr. Prasanna Gunasena revealed that 10 out of 56 drivers randomly tested during a mobile drug screening program at Bastian Mawatha Bus Station were found to have used drugs.

Initial urine tests confirmed that the drivers had used substances such as ice, heroin, and cannabis. The identified individuals are scheduled to face further legal action.

Commenting on the findings, Dr. Gunasena said, “That 10 out of 56 drivers tested positive in a program funded by public taxes shows a serious concern. Public support and vigilance from bus owners are essential for this program to succeed. Passengers have the right to report drivers under the influence, and bus owners must ensure their employees drive responsibly.”

He said that drivers attempted to evade checks using various communication methods, highlighting the need for increased public and owner vigilance. The program, which began in the Western Province, will continue across the country without prior notice, with regular raids being conducted.
