Tamed elephant shot at during Mahiyangana Raja Maha Vihara Perahera: Wild Life

A tamed female elephant has been injured following a shooting incident by a Wildlife officer trying to prevent them from attacking people during the annual perahera procession of the Mahiyangana Raja Maha Vihara, Wildlife Director General M.G.C. Sooriyabandara said.

While issuing a media notice today, he said the elephant was shot at with rubber bullets with the aim of chasing it away for the safety of the people who had arrived to witness the perahera.

Medical treatment is being provided to the female elephant by a veterinarian of the Wildlife Department.

Mahiyangana police are conducting further investigations into the incident.

"Officers attached to the Wildlife Conservation Ministry and other relevant officials will conduct a separate investigation into the incident. Further decisions will be taken following the recommendations of the Ministry investigations," Sooriyabandara said. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)
