Tamarind shortage drives price to Rs. 2,000 per kilogram

A shortage of tamarind in the local market has caused the retail price to soar above Rs. 2,000 per kilogram in the Hatton area, sellers said.

They said previously the retail price of a kilogram of tamarind ranged from Rs. 350 to Rs. 400. However, the price has now significantly increased.

According to traders, the shortage is attributed to a poor tamarind harvest this season.

Tamarind can't be just grown like onions in a season. The trees take years to mature. If the climate change and other effects are causing poor harvest it is time to look at importing until new plants can be grown if it is at all worth anymore. Foods and products that were grown for a long time can't be done that way anymore, and imports are only clear and definite way of relief. Better import food than expensive cars anyway.

Don’t worry. Tamarind will be added to the list of smuggled cargo like turmeric from India. Import restrictions only help those bringing in goods through informal channels Price difference makes it a lucrative business

I repeatedly say, on many agricultural crops and trees, India had developed leaps and bounds, They have developed short varietirs that yield high in 2-3 years including Tamarid. Government should start importing these varieties from india. Even cattle breeds are superior and survive our climatic conditions unlike the NZ or AUssie cattle we imported nad many died. The NPP government should concentrate on this as we farmers dont have the power to do this.
