Tabs to be given for A/L students and teachers this year: Minister

Advanced Level students and teachers would be given Tablet PCs (Tabs) during this year, Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said yesterday.

He said, students will be able to seek knowledge with the help of the Tabs, at any time from anywhere through the internet even if teachers were not available.

“A/L students can utilise the internet to follow any lectures given by experts”, the Minister said.

The Minister also said he had advised the Commissioner of Examinations to find out the ways to provide relevant syllabus and study materials to the students so that it would be supportive to face their examinations.

The Minister has instructed the Commissioner to make necessary arrangements to include the contents of text book and course materials into the tabs so the teachers and students are no need to refer the syllabus and text books. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)

Give them Foot wear instead and a Glass of Milk daily. Most still have only a pair of Slippers and little Nutrition. This is Sri Lanka.

Tab is good if the teachers could make use of it and make students use it. What I see is many computer labs in the schools are locked up and not used at all.

Before giving tabs to students please make the internet facility affordable to everyone including students. If a student is unable to pay for an internet connection the tab will be of no use! Currently we pay 48% tax on communication! this one of the most foolish things this government has done! Internet should be available to everyone at a very low cost. Then people will use this facility for business as well as education. The government should encourage and facilitate the use of technology for people to do business

Technology is good. However, it should be implemented in a sustainable manner. As an examples, as a pilot, each school should be allocated with a Tabs Bank or a Tab Library where students or classrooms could borrow tabs for a set period i.e. two hours a day per week etc. and later extend to borrow them to take home. Each school should be allocated tabs as a percentage of number of students in the school.
