Two women from Malambada and Walgama who served as housemaids, were found killed in a house in Matara, police said.
They said according to the complaint, when the homeowner had left the house on Saturday morning and returned in the evening the two housemaids were missing. The owner had reportedly called out their names without receiving any response.
Further investigations revealed that the back door of the house was open, prompting the owner to inform the police about the absence of the maids from the residence.
During the investigation conducted by police it was revealed that the two women, aged 67 and 70 had been murdered in the bathroom and toilet areas designated for the maids' use.
It was found that various valuable items including 12 non-gold bangles, 02 necklaces, a golden spoon, and 39 foreign coins, which had been stored in a room cupboard were missing.
Police said they arrested a 25-year-old suspect residing in Tudawa, Matara, believed to be connected to the incident. Police have also taken custody of the stolen property found in the possession of the suspect.
