Strong winds forecast over several areas; public urged to take precautions

Colombo, July 27 (Daily Mirror) - The Department of Meteorology has issued a warning of strong winds over several parts of the country and the surrounding sea areas due to active southwest monsoon conditions.

The warning, issued at 11.00 a.m. today (July 27), is valid for 24 hours until 11.00 a.m. on July 28.

The department said wind speeds of 40 to 50 km/h may occur at times in the Northern, North Central and Central provinces, as well as in the Hambantota and Trincomalee districts.

The strong winds could damage roof tiles, power and telephone lines, and cause tree branches or even large trees to fall, posing a risk to people and property. Crop damage is also possible, while low-lying coastal areas may experience sea wave inundation.

Meanwhile, wind speeds in the sea areas from Hambantota to Pottuvil and from Kalpitiya to Kankesanthurai via Mannar may increase to 50 to 60 km/h at times, making these sea areas very rough. Vessels anchored near harbours could also be be at risk of damage due to collisions.

The department has advised the public, fishermen and naval communities to take the necessary precautions and follow the recommended safety measures to minimise the risk of accidents caused by the strong winds.
