Strong wind advisory issued for several areas

Colombo, July 22 (Daily Mirror) - The Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre has issued a strong wind advisory for the Northern and North-central provinces, as well as Hambantota and Trincomalee districts, effective until 11.00 a.m. tomorrow (23).

According to the advisory issued at 11.00 a.m. today (22), strong winds reaching speeds of 40–50 kmph could occur at times in these areas due to active south-west monsoon conditions.

The Department of Meteorology warned that the strong winds could damage roof tiles and sheets, power and communication lines, and may result in the breaking of tree branches and uprooting of large trees.

It also cautioned that paddy crops, banana and papaya trees, orchards, harbour yachts, and low-lying coastal areas could be affected, with a possibility of seawater inundation near the coast.

The public has been advised to remain cautious of damaged roofs, fallen trees and power lines, and to stay alert to changing weather conditions.

People requiring emergency assistance have been requested to contact local disaster management authorities and follow future weather advisories issued by the Department of Meteorology.
