Street lights shutdown may trigger accidents, security risks – motorcyclists warn

Colombo, April 1 (Daily Mirror) - The Ceylon Motorcyclists Association (CMA) has raised concerns over the government’s decision to switch off street lights from 6.00 p.m. to 10.00 p.m., warning that it could negatively impact public safety and security.

In a letter addressed to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya, and the Transport Minister, the association cautioned that reduced street lighting during peak evening hours may lead to an increase in road accidents and criminal activity.

The letter, signed by CMA President Virantha Amarasinghe, stated that poor visibility on roads could heighten the risk faced by motorists, particularly motorcyclists, while also creating conditions that may encourage harassment, especially against women.

“We have raised our objection when a similar decision was made in 2022. The funniest part of the story is that some of the high ranking police officers who have been hostile towards motorcyclists in the past have become silent on the issue. It is also a move aimed at helping the police officers survive enabling them to fine the motorcyclists,” Amarasinghe said in his later.

The association proposed the using of solar power for the signal lights, sign boards and for the street lights.
