Sri Lankan tea factory sets global record

Elevating the global profile of Ceylon Tea, New Vithanakande Ceylon Black Tea (FFExSp) has entered the Guinness World Records as the most expensive tea ever sold.

“This is not just a win for New Vithanakande, but a global spotlight on the unmatched quality, heritage, and craftsmanship of Ceylon Tea,” said Pubudu Gunasekera, CEO of New Vithanakande Tea Factory.

He added, “A heartfelt congratulations to everyone behind this incredible achievement — a moment of pride for Sri Lanka, and a reminder that our local excellence can reach world-class recognition.”

This achievement adds to a history of record-breaking success for the factory. In 2023, New Vithanakande set record prices for its OP1 grade tea at the Colombo Tea Auction in collaboration with TEAPOND, a leading Japanese tea shop. The factory has consistently commanded top prices at both local and international auctions, reinforcing its reputation as a leader in premium tea production.

Owned and managed by the M G Group of Companies, the factory is led by Chairman Ranjith Gunaratne and Deputy Chairman Prabhath Jayasundara.
