Sri Lanka reaffirms commitment to regional solar cooperation

Colombo, July 16 (Daily Mirror) – Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya today reaffirmed Sri Lanka’s commitment to strengthening regional solar cooperation and securing sustainable energy for the future, as she addressed delegates at the Seventh Meeting of the International Solar Alliance (ISA) Regional Committee for Asia and the Pacific.

The high-level meeting, held in Colombo under the theme “Advancing Solar Cooperation Across a Region of Diversity and Opportunity,” brought together regional leaders to advance shared solar energy goals.

Sri Lanka, serving as vice-chair of the Regional Committee, played a central role in steering the discussions.

Delivering the inaugural address, Prime Minister Amarasuriya underscored the urgency of transitioning to clean energy, highlighting Sri Lanka’s strategic focus on solar development as a path toward regional energy security and environmental sustainability.

A major milestone of the event was the formal presentation of a country partnership roadmap between Sri Lanka and the ISA Regional Committee. The framework was officially handed over to Energy Minister Kumara Jayakodi, setting the course for enhanced collaboration and project implementation.

Minister Jayakodi used the platform to unveil the government’s flagship initiative, “Battle for Solar Energy,” aimed at accelerating the rollout of rooftop solar power systems and meeting the national target of sourcing 70% of energy from renewables by 2030.

The conference also spotlighted the University of Moratuwa as a central knowledge and innovation hub, tasked with driving solar research and technology development across the region.
