Colombo. Dec 4 (Daily Mirror) - A potential countrywide egg shortage following the deaths of an estimated 3 million egg-laying hens due to the recent cyclone and floods affecting Sri Lanka.

Speaking at a press conference held at the Association’s head office auditorium in Raddolugama, Seeduwa, at 10.00 a.m., Jayawardena highlighted that the price of eggs has already risen and urged the government to take immediate action to address the situation.

“Flour, sugar, eggs, and margarine are the four essential ingredients for the bakery industry. A shortage of eggs could lead to higher prices for bakery products or even bring the entire industry to a halt,” he said.

He also highlighted the timing of the crisis, noting that 25% of annual cake sales occur during the upcoming Christmas and New Year 2026 season, warning that a lack of eggs could significantly affect festive season supplies.

Jayawardena called on the government to conduct a thorough study of the current situation and implement measures to find alternative solutions to prevent an egg shortage from impacting consumers and the bakery industry nationwide.
