Colombo, Dec. 29 (Daily Mirror) - Sri Lanka has the potential to become more resilient and grow into a US$ 300 billion economy by 2030, despite facing severe natural disasters such as Cyclone Ditwah, Secretary to the Ministry of Industries and Entrepreneurship Development, Ms. Thilaka Jayasundara, said today (29).
She made these remarks while participating in the first Certified Productivity Specialist (CPS) certification ceremony conducted by the National Productivity Secretariat, following its accreditation as a Certification Body by the Asian Productivity Organization (APO).
The Certification Institute of the National Productivity Secretariat, operating under the Ministry of Industries and Entrepreneurship Development, awarded certificates to nine Certified Productivity Specialists and 34 Certified Productivity Professionals of the National Productivity Secretariat for 2025. The ceremony, held in Colombo under the patronage of Ms. Jayasundara, aimed at strengthening productivity consulting and enhancing national productivity.
The National Productivity Secretariat, Sri Lanka’s premier government institution for productivity promotion, functions as the country’s representative body to the APO. The APO Certification Institute has introduced the APO Certified Productivity Specialist programme to elevate the standards of productivity professionals across the region. Sri Lanka has become the 12th country among the 21 APO member nations to offer this certification. Malaysia, Vietnam, Mongolia, Indonesia, Pakistan, India, Iran, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines and Bangladesh are among the countries already offering it.
Addressing the gathering, Ms. Jayasundara said Cyclone Ditva had posed a significant challenge to the national economy, with around 550 exporters directly affected. However, she expressed confidence that the country would recover swiftly and achieve this year’s export target of US$ 18 billion.
She further said that the groundwork has already been laid to expand Sri Lanka’s economy from its current size of US$ 98.94 billion to US$ 300 billion by 2030. Emphasising that productivity is the key driver of economic growth, she said promoting a culture of productivity across all sectors is the only sustainable path to strengthening the economy and improving Sri Lanka’s performance in global indicators.
The event was attended by Director General (Planning) of the Ministry of Industries and Entrepreneurship Development Mangala Gunaratne, Director General (Engineering) D.P.N. Wijesiri, Director General of the National Productivity Secretariat Suranga Gunaratne, Director Niranja Jayakody, along with officials from the National Productivity Secretariat and representatives from the public and private sectors.
