Colombo, Jan 20 (Daily Mirror) - The Sri Lanka Police provided a compensation of Rs. 1 million to the family of a lorry driver who lost his life in the shooting incident in Narammala.

Acting Inspector General of Police Deshabandu Thennakoon personally handed over the compensation at the residence of the deceased driver in Alawwa.

The incident occurred on Thursday night when a 41-year-old lorry driver became the victim of an accidental discharge from a sub-inspector's firearm.

The Sub Inspector and a Constable had signalled the driver to stop, but he had allegedly defied the order. Accordingly, the 59-year-old Sub-Inspector and a Constable chased and halted the lorry for a spot inspection, resulting in the accidental discharge of the Sub-Inspector's firearm.

The critically injured driver was rushed to the Narammala Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

In the aftermath, both the Sub-Inspector and the Constable involved in the incident were arrested, with the Sub-Inspector remanded till January 23 by the Narammala Magistrate.

Meanwhile, the Police have suspended the duties of both officers pending further investigations.

This is our public money. It is not the money donated by those in the Police. Again the bloody Police bastards are able to escape without paying a penny from there pockets.

Rs 4.2 million for a police officer killed under similar circumstances and Rs 1 million for a civilian, killed so heinously and mercilessly by a blood-thirsty police officer. What an eye-wash. That is yukthiya in Sri Lanka. What can a family with three young children do with this measly amount. Someone please help this family to obtain adequate compensation. Moreover, eight other families, too, have been made detitute because of this dastardly act. What compensation will they get. The entire country is watching. The only positive factor is that there is irrefutable video footage of at least part of this incident, though there is no way to ascertain whether this officer was under the influence of liquor.

Rs 1m for an innocent human life ?. what a joke ! only in Sri lanka

    Nimal Saturday, 20 January 2024 10:04 AM

The official statement contradicts the video circulating online. The victim was NOT rushed to hospital. He was either critically injured or more likely deceased while the SI was pacing back and forth thinking about what he had done for a few minutes. Anyone with half a brain would have immediately taken the victim to hospital. At one point the SI tried to get on his motorbike and leave the scene. Also, the SI verbally confirmed that he tried to scare the driver with his gun when the firearm discharged. The compensation offered is insulting.

    Onlooker Saturday, 20 January 2024 04:21 PM

And the Police van that came took the culprit cop away but the villagers had to take the injured to hospital later. Save your kind and damn the innocent injured. New Police Motto.

Need Better Compensation Saturday, 20 January 2024 10:11 AM

Definitely have to compensate more by the courts. His yearly Pay x Expected life expectancy of say 90years is fair. Will be tough times for the family with sudden lost

    Jayantha Saturday, 20 January 2024 10:12 AM

Not enough. Family should receive at least 10million. Legal action and action should be filed against both officers who tried to rob the innocent driver. Also against TA,DT and narammala oic.

Disgusted citizen Saturday, 20 January 2024 10:16 AM

There goes poor man's tax money paid for the utter negligence of the police! Is there no end to this????!!!! Get the damn cop to pay from his own personal money!!!!!

Premalal Perera Saturday, 20 January 2024 10:31 AM

One Million for a life? How about the destroyed lives of the wife and three children? Will anyone stop their vehicle in the night when unifetified people flag them down?

    Sokrates Saturday, 20 January 2024 10:34 AM

First, the family is compensated with a tiny amount, which is not even sufficient to allow the family to survive for a year. Secondly, the family has to endure having money handed over to them by a convicted criminal.

    Pradeep Saturday, 20 January 2024 10:42 AM

Our respect to the Sri Lanka Police who found that the value of a common man's life in a village far from Colombo can be estimated in money..

Rajiv De Silva Saturday, 20 January 2024 10:55 AM

Wow as it came from from the Police department. In the end it is our money and these criminals should pay them out of their pocket otherwise must spend time in gallows. It is so simple.

    Onlooker Saturday, 20 January 2024 04:25 PM

Yes but though the Supreme Court has faulted Acting Police Chief Deshabandu Tennakoon and three other over torture and ordered them to pay 500,000 rupees each in compensation and ordered disciplinary action nothing has come to fruition. That is Paradise - from some.

    Sunil Saturday, 20 January 2024 11:00 AM

It is only about 18 months salary. Life is so precious it is not just the breadwinner bringing food to the table, but a great support to wife, children, siblings and friends. Namal gave Rs 50 Million for Olympic Champion. I think we will have to get IMF to set values for each type of incident ( Sports champs, Music Champs, Accidental killing etc ) so that amounts disbursed are fair to all.

    sam Saturday, 20 January 2024 11:20 AM

Compensation should be paid by those involved and not from public funds

    Nihal S Saturday, 20 January 2024 12:49 PM

Can our lawyers volunteer to take this case to seek justice for the victim family and to punish the criminals.

    Spartacus Saturday, 20 January 2024 02:18 PM

Compensation should not be from public funds. This is a crime and it needs to be compensated to this family by slicing at least 10% salary cut from Police Officers of this division including IGP to feel the actual pain of this incident.

    Francis Saturday, 20 January 2024 03:22 PM

Rs 2000 be recovered from every officer above the rank of sub inspector and 500 from Sargent and below and Rs 5000 from ASPs and above to pay this innocent widow and the help her with the education of the three children. Acting IGP it was not long ago you gave Rs 4.5 million to the widow of the police constable shot dead in Mirissa. You seems to be having a very short memory. What is the difference between the two dead, both of them were innocent. So please raise the money as suggested above without touching the public funds and pay her promptly and show the country that there is no double standards

    Cherath Saturday, 20 January 2024 05:03 PM

How can you put a figure in rupees for the loss of their father of 3 kids and a wife? The children will be severely handicapped mentally and in usual comforts to the entirety of their lives. The courts should consider the annual earnings lost x the number of working yrs left of the father. The children must be financed until they complete their tertiary education by SL Police.

Needs better Justice Saturday, 20 January 2024 05:45 PM

The Sub Inspector should be charged for manslaughter. Full Stop. Let the lorry driver's family sue the SI and bankrupt the rascal.

    Kumar Saturday, 20 January 2024 08:01 PM

Victim family must demand 100 million via court. Court must have teach a good lesson to these police departments. This is not first in Sri Lanka, it happened many times in the North and East. When you guys going to change?

I live in Europe, but sometimes I miss my country then I see these news, no law and order, lethal fire arms given to police but no training given, police can shoot anyone and say its accident etc. After I seen these incidents/murders I am glad that don't live here anymore.

how much compensation will not bring him back...but the thug cop need to go to prison for manslaughter

    Jeanne Sunday, 21 January 2024 04:00 AM

How do you "accidentally" shoot someone? Especially when you are a police officer who should know better. This country is becoming like the old wild west - totally lawless and reckless. Bring back the death sentence. Some people simply are not capable of rehabilitation.

    Jerome Sunday, 21 January 2024 07:01 AM

Sri Lankan value for innocent human life.

navratne willamune Sunday, 21 January 2024 08:15 AM

they reward brave police offofficers when they go beyond their duty to protect people. The wrong dowers needs to be punished harshly, dismissed without pension rights.etc

    Sambo Sunday, 21 January 2024 08:16 AM

If this happened to a top politician would this have been the same compensation they will receive. That cop must be given a minimum 15 yaers.

Kapila nanayakkara Sunday, 21 January 2024 12:14 PM

How can we reverse trigger happy police culture considering citizens except elite as criminals?

    L Jaya Sunday, 21 January 2024 12:10 PM

    One million is peanuts

    VJ K Sunday, 21 January 2024 08:15 PM

.... "awards" is this an achievement of SL police? Only in Srilanka the police decides the compensation, but it is by the courts by law in the rest of the world. How on the earth we call Srilanka has democracy when police has more power than law. Some lawyer must represent this poor family to get desirable compensation by law not just by police head. This PC should be hanged which will teach a lesson for the rest. Shame on Srilanka Police.

    Mori Monday, 22 January 2024 11:28 AM

Who's money they r giving...? probably not from the tax payers money from the police budget...can be from the officer who shot that innocent driver...
