Sri Lanka Gem and Jewellery Association secures reforms to boost trade competitiveness

In a landmark step for Sri Lanka’s gem and jewellery sector, the government has introduced key reforms to ease the business operations and strengthen trade competitiveness.

This achievement was made possible through the intervention of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, whose guidance was instrumental in driving progress.

Special appreciation is extended to Industries and Entrepreneurship Development Minister Sunil Handunneththi,

National Gem and Jewellery Authority (NGJA) Chairman, Export Development Board (EDB) Chairman and ministry secretaries for their tireless efforts. As the apex body of the industry, the Sri Lanka Gem and Jewellery Association worked closely with the government, NGJA, EDB and partner associations to support and advance these reforms. A key outcome is the gazette introducing a new procedure for the import of rough gemstones — an important move to facilitate trade, improve transparency and promote sustainable growth.

This milestone reflects the strength of collaboration between the government and industry, unlocking new potential for Sri Lanka’s gem and jewellery trade regionally and globally.
