The government is implementing a special programme to grant the benefit of the appreciation of the rupee against the dollar to the people, Finance State Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya said.

While addressing a meeting in Ruwanwella this morning, he said since 75% of the goods in the country's market are imported, when the value of the dollar decreases, the prices of those goods too should decrease within a reasonable period of time.

In order to carry out a survey on this matter, the Trade and Policy Department of the Finance Ministry is conducting a survey together with the Consumer Affairs Authority.

If the prices of building materials, food and materials and equipment related to the agriculture industry do not decrease, measures should be taken to rectify this.

The value of the dollar did not decrease but we inflated the rupees by not paying due interest and loans to other countries. But our locals are not worried as long as their buffet are available even if they have stay in line.

All your plans to reduce the cost of living has gone haywire when the rupee appreciated with prices not budging an inch downwards. Always you preach that the Consumer Affairs is monitoring prices and we see on media a few selected places raided just for the public consumption thereafter everything is forgotten. First streamline the govt organisations to adopt stringent measures to apprehend those who are violating govt policy and punishment served on a continuing basis. Flying squads should have honest men who would not bend the rules and regulations!!!!!!!!!!
