Colombo, March 29 (Daily Mirror) - On the heels of the massive raid conducted on 'Spas' in the Negombo area resulting in the detection of two HIV cases, illegal spas and Ayurvedic spas that secretly offer prostitution services are facing imminent closure in many parts of the island, Daily Mirror learns.

Sources familiar with the matter told Daily Mirror that the women employed in brothels operating under the guise of spas have begun to vacate in fear of HIV.

The spas operating in the vicinity of Nugegoda and Thalawathugoda are the worst to have been affected by this development as a significant portion of them secretly offer prostitution.

This follows the large scale raid that Police personnel in Negombo carried out seizing 53 spas and wellness centres masquerading as brothels, resulting in the detainment of approximately 140 women, many of whom were involved in prostitution.

This crackdown unfolded through a coordinated effort spearheaded by the Officers in Charge (OICs) from three nearby police stations, as revealed by police officials.

The crackdown spanned Negombo, Kochchikade, and Seeduwa police jurisdictions, spanning several days. These decisive actions were prompted by intelligence gathered by police intelligence units.

According to police sources, the decision to carry out raids on spas in the Negombo area stems from an incident where one of the arrested drug dealers was found to be HIV positive.

Following interrogation, the individual confessed to frequenting spas regularly, which promoted the law enforcement authorities to conduct raids.

However, authorities remain undecided on whether to expand raids on spas, as doing so could potentially expose personnel deployed as decoys to health risks.

Furthermore, police sources stated that the failure to monitor spa and wellness centres has resulted in them being operated as brothels.

Meanwhile, Daily Mirror also learns that the tendency of women in illegal spas using methamphetamine, commonly known as the drug 'ice' has drastically increased.

Informed sources said that the managers of the spas have been compelled to expel the women who were caught using Ice.

In light of this development, the owners are in quandary to operate the centres.

Every member in power and opposition should be ashamed! Friday, 29 March 2024 10:02 AM

How long have these brothels been operating? If you get this information, you will know the god fathers. Somehow I get the feeling that these brothels started during the last regime, but thrived under latest period of poverty. Intense poverty caused wide spread prostitution.

No, current President and Government should be shamed Sunday, 31 March 2024 04:34 PM

Brothels have been going on longer than the limited British rule in Sri Lanka. The current parliament probably has many MPs who either go to brothels or have women on the side, whom they regularly pay and maintain to have good sex. Bigger problems than brothels in the country.

Give them a suffcent leagale cover. Please educate them. Please protect them! Its also a sign of poverty !

Michael Judd Monday, 01 April 2024 01:23 PM

Absolutely agree. 2 cases and a reactive gesture as per usual. No thought to educate the public on safe sexual practices. This country!!!

Please protect these sexworkers by legalising prostitution. These women and men need protection, physical care, respect, and a fair income. Also to prevent drugs and sexual diseases, prevent minors in the sexindustry. You must monitor these sexworkers, not punish them. You can not stop sexwork, it is the oldest profession.

Either legalise prostitution so that women will have to undergo regular health checks OR Close down all SPAs

    ANTON Friday, 29 March 2024 02:06 PM

I WONDER HOW LONG IT TOOK HIV VIRUS TO ATTACK SPA CENTERS.

    Chamath Friday, 29 March 2024 03:17 PM

Why aren't there raids at Spas in Maharagama and Boralesgamuwa? Surely, there will be more HIV cases.

Desperate Officials Friday, 29 March 2024 04:03 PM

DIGs and OICs wouldn't have got their monthly commissions from spa owners in Negombo, Kochchikade, and Seeduwa areas.

GUTTER OPERATED BUSINESSES SHOULD BE CLOSED DOWN Friday, 29 March 2024 04:44 PM

OWNERS OF ALL SPAS ARE RESPONSIBLE TO MAKE SURE THEIR BUSINESSES ARE REGISTED OR ELSE FACE IMMEDIATE CLOSURE AND FINED HEAVILY, SO THEY DO NOT SHOW UP LIKE MUSHROOMS AFTER A WHILE. I BELIEVE SOME SPARS MAY BE OPERATED BY SO CALLED TOURISTS USING A LOCAL AS A FRONT.

Zafar Khan Friday, 29 March 2024 08:17 PM

Spas should be regulated with good guidelines and standards. Closing the spas can push prostitution to a dangerous level of an underground crime causing the spread of aids and stds among the people. Authorities think in a realistic manner

    Terrence K Saturday, 30 March 2024 08:23 AM

In my previous comments I emphasized that promiscuous men and women will have to face the consequences of the HIV virus. HIV kills the immune system cells that help the body to fight infections and diseases. The immune system becomes weak when it cannot make enough CD cells to fight HIV. So don't get enticed with the short term pleasure of having many partners because the end is premature DEATH!!!!!!!!!

so much so for tourism and the splashing adds, along with the open visa etc. It was profit for the sake of profit and nothing else. Morals etc, thrown to the dustbin and principles and practice thrown into the winds. How much has the country to descend so that the few will thrive. What happened to the daily dose of spiritual and moral high ground by religious tape recorded exhortations.

Spas offering soft sex is better than brothels

    ANNECUNT Saturday, 30 March 2024 06:24 PM

check all spas for hiv. check every where for hiv

    Kanthan Saturday, 30 March 2024 07:24 PM

Thalawathugoda is another notorious area for illegal spa services. Everyone knows that they are brothels and not offering any spa treatment. Why not rade?

    JD Saturday, 30 March 2024 07:30 PM

Single males need sexual outlets and human contact to relieve their urges. Shutting these down would only create a more sexually frustrated and aggressive society. Sex work must be legalized and regulated with proper health precautions.

    ANNECUNT Tuesday, 02 April 2024 12:36 PM

check hiv in parliament how about Namal?Basil?
