Shooting kills another youth in Negombo

A youth, who was injured in a shooting incident at Lellama in Negombo, succumbed to his injuries this afternoon while being treated at the Negombo Hospital, police said.

Two gunmen arrived on a motorbike opened fire at the youth in Lellama and fled the scene.

The youth who sustained serious injuries was admitted to the Negombo Hospital where he died this afternoon.

The victim is a 25-year-old youth a resident of the Pitipana area.

The motive for the killing is yet to be ascertained. Dungalpitiya police are investigating.

Going by the data, most of the killings involving firearms shows assailants arriving in pairs on motorbikes or on three wheelers. To deal with this effectively the police should adopt a national policy of random fixed number of “stop and search” each day in every police area for motorbikes with pillion riders and three wheelers with at least two male passengers with no women or children . Police have to think creatively , this why dismantling the lower ranks ( Constables and Sergeants ) and creating a police force exclusively of officer class of university graduates is the right way ahead for the future.
