Shashi Weerawansa released on bail

Shashi Weerawansa, the wife of National Freedom Front (NFF) Leader Wimal Weerawansa was today released on bail by Colombo Chief Magistrate's Court.

Colombo Chief Magistrate Nandana Amarasinghe ordered Shashi Weerawansa to be released on a cash bail of Rs.50,000 with two sureties of Rs.5 million. The Court also issued an order preventing the accused from leaving the country.

On last Friday (27), the Colombo Chief Magistrate's Court imposed a two-year-rigorous imprisonment with a fine of Rs. 100,000 on Shashi Weerawansa. This is over an incident where Mrs. Weerawansa had fraudulently obtained two passports including a diplomatic passport by submitting forged documents to the Department of Immigration and Emigration.

Shashi Weerawansa had filed an appeal in the Colombo High Court through the Magistrate's Court registrar office challenging the judgment of Magistrate's Court.

Accordingly, defence counsel applied for release on bail pending appeal and moved Court that the accused be released on bail taking into consideration the gravity of the offence. The Attorney General did not raise objections for the application and invited the court to apply its discretionary power for the application.

President's Counsel Shavindra Fernando appeared for the accused. Senior Deputy Solicitor General Dileepa Pieris appeared for the Attorney General. (Lakmal Sooriyagoda)
