The flying squads of the state-run bus service the ‘Sri Lanka Transport Board‘ have been disbanded after their members were found guilty of corrupt practices despite being assigned primarily to curb such activities, an official said.
SLTB Chairman Lalith de Alvis told the Daily Mirror the flying squads attached to the head office and regional offices of the SLTB were disbanded temporarily since their members were found involved in taking cash inducements from unscrupulous bus conductors to forestall disciplinary actions.
The SLTB deploys flying squads for random inspection of buses in operation to detect cases such as ticketless travelling.
The SLTB loses nearly Rs. 2 million a day due to corruption by conductors who charge money without issuing tickets to passengers.(Kelum Bandara)
