SLTB flying squads disbanded for indulging in corruption

The flying squads of the state-run bus service the ‘Sri Lanka Transport Board‘ have been disbanded after their members were found guilty of corrupt practices despite being assigned primarily to curb such activities, an official said.

SLTB Chairman Lalith de Alvis told the Daily Mirror the flying squads attached to the head office and regional offices of the SLTB were disbanded temporarily since their members were found involved in taking cash inducements from unscrupulous bus conductors to forestall disciplinary actions.

The SLTB deploys flying squads for random inspection of buses in operation to detect cases such as ticketless travelling.

The SLTB loses nearly Rs. 2 million a day due to corruption by conductors who charge money without issuing tickets to passengers.(Kelum Bandara)

Compared to the corruption by the Politicians , ticketless travelling by a minority is coasting the tax payers almost negligible amount. But what is coasting is the corruption by the bus conductors.

This country is corrupt through and through. Even the officers who are supposed to fight corruption are corrupt. Corruption appears to be a genetic trait of Sri Lankans. This plague can only be countered with a minimum sentence of 10 years in prison. This offense must not be bailable even if the bribe was only Rs 100.

These frauds can only be reduced by using cashless mechanism in the bus. But people may not swap their cards and rode free most of the times.

Maybe your idea might work is Islamic nations like Dubai, but going cashless and providing for free services should only be for those receiving government welfare, and even then cards about such are easy to forge.

One of the biggest mistake SWRD did was to nationalise the public transport services. In Sri Lanka, the government services are not properly managed, rampant corruption as the big shots are corrupt. However, the private bus services are worse when it comes to customer service. This is purely because of corrupt politicians and officials. I Don't think we will ever be able to streamline the public transport services as far as we vote for members of the House of elders 1. Poor us, we pay taxes to be looted. The change must come from us, the voter's, if we want a better country.

Having public transports is comment is most countries. If all buses are private it would be bad. as when private businesses all act as business mafia, for example egg farmers and merchants imports broke their corrupt attitudes.

Please don't try to fool the public. It's been many years since tickets were not issued. The flying squad was only flying with money no action cos if there was all the bases will be off the road

The behavior of the flying squad now disbanded members reminds me of the allegations against the officials of Cricket, Rugby, Football and other sports. Country is awash is corrupt behaviour and should rack quite high amongst nations with most corrupt behaviors.

Some conductors are earning very good money on some roots as they do not issue tickets to the passengers. In this country the public have to pay for all corruption and mismanagement.
