Colombo, May 18 (Daily Mirror) - The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) is requesting President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya to attend the National War Heroes' Commemoration Ceremony to be held tomorrow, SLPP General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam said today.
He told a news conference that it is reported that the President will not attend the event and said it is a big mistake done by the President in the name of the war heroes who sacrificed their lives.
"The SLPP, as a party, is requesting President Anura Kumara Dissanayake as the head of state and Harini Amarasuriya as the Prime Minister to attend the National War Heroes' Commemoration Ceremony tomorrow," he said.
He said soon after they learnt that the head of state is not attending the ceremony, the SLPP requested the Defence Ministry to grant permission to hold a separate ceremony with the participation of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, who ended the war and said the request was rejected by the Ministry.
"However, the SLPP, as a national duty, has decided to hold a War Heroes' Commemoration near the war memorial on May 20 at 5.00 pm.
