Colombo, April 30 (Daily Mirror) - The Sri Lanka Press Institute (SLPI), with the support of the India–Sri Lanka Foundation, continues to enhance digital journalism in Sri Lanka through a series of practical training programmes for media professionals.
As part of this initiative, SLPI held a workshop on March 11, 2026, at the Hilton Colombo for senior journalists representing Sinhala, Tamil and English media. The session was conducted by Sree Sreenivasan, CEO and Co-founder of Digimentors, and focused on how artificial intelligence is transforming newsrooms. Discussions covered AI’s role in news production, audience engagement, evolving storytelling formats, and the growing importance of ethics and credibility in journalism.
Continuing its capacity-building efforts, SLPI also conducted a “Data Analytics & Reporting in Journalism” workshop on Tuesday, April 28, at its auditorium. The programme was led by Dr. Radheeka Abeyweera, Assistant Vice President and Principal Data Scientist at Octave (John Keells Holdings) and former Director of Data Science at Meta.
The session introduced journalists to data-driven reporting techniques, including data sourcing, verification, basic analysis, and the application of AI tools in journalism.
SLPI said these initiatives are aimed at equipping media professionals with practical skills to navigate an increasingly data-driven and AI-powered media landscape.
