SLMC wants doctors to fix their handwriting

Colombo, Nov. 14 (Daily Mirror) - The Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC) has issued a reminder to all medical professionals to strictly follow official guidelines when writing and recommending prescriptions, citing growing concerns over patient safety.

In a notice released, the Council said it had received multiple complaints from pharmacists and members of the public about unclear or improperly written prescriptions. These errors, it warned, have in some cases made it difficult to identify the correct medication, creating a potential risk to patients.

The SLMC stressed that its ethical conduct guidelines contain detailed instructions on how prescriptions should be written, as outlined in the official code of practice. It urged all doctors to comply with these standards to ensure clarity, accuracy, and the safe dispensing of medicines.

The pharmacies should refuse to fill the prescription if it is not legible. In long term prescription should be written on a computer and printed.

All professionals we believe in clear and precise communication. Not these idiotic or hubristic doctors. What do they think who they are? It’s only in Sri Lanka that we revere these graduate professionals (not even without any post grad qualifications). Recently I went to a big private hospital for a consultation. We as the paying patients but they just treated us like rubbish but look at when consultants appear at the reception. All staff just stands up! This drama was repeated every time one of those guys appear at the reception! We the patients who pay for all those staff at reception (and those consultants too) are treated like dirt while revering those who make a living out of our hard earned cash! As another professional (not the medical kind) felt embarrassed by the slavish behaviour of these so called professionals (and their supporting staff)!

We need to digitalise the prescriptions rather than a paper copy and have an app to record with QR codes. This will be beneficial in so many ways

This is a very good thing. Some doctor's handwriting is completely illegible and pharmacists try hard to read and then end up guessing thereby issuing the wrong medication.

When you go to pharmacy the prescription gets passed on to several hands trying to figure out the name or brand of medicine. The only character that is clear are the first and last characters.so the medicine is determined my first and last characters.

Doctors should have access to apps which have list of registered medicines via their phones, and print out the prescription either on ink jet or mobile thermal printers.
