SLMC opposed to new electoral system

The Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC), backed by some other minority parties, is opposed to the proposed new electoral system, officials said yesterday.

A new electoral system called the "Mixed Member Proportional System" has been proposed and discussed by the Steering Committee working on constitutional proposals.

However, SLMC leader, Urban Development Minister Rauff Hakeem told Daily Mirror yesterday that his party was against it because, if enacted, it would be disadvantageous for the parties.

“The minor parties have some serious concerns about the electoral reforms,” he said.

He said his party had had talks with parties such as the Democratic People’s Front led by Minister Mano Ganeshan in this regard recently. The All Ceylon Makkal Party is yet another minority party which has reservations about the proposed system, he said.(Kelum Bandara)

To get into power the SLMC TNA and minor parties were all willing to run as a coalition. Now they see that the JVP is no threat and the so called JO is full of the corrupt who people will not vote for either so these minor parties will be running individual to gain more parlimentry seats. This party is very useless for Muslim community. Even no mouth talk about muslims what happening arround the country. Very opportunist.. so who cares , on up-coming election SLMC will the people choice specially in north and east

Minority parties are at a disadvantage in a winner-takes-all electoral systems. If they are going to remove or reduce proportional representation then federalism is a must.

It is time all political parties and the voters think in terms of national policy and not religion, race or clan. This new electoral system is not new to Sri Lanka. The winner has to be first past the post.

what minority benefit does parties like SLMC and political wheeler dealers serve? Proportional representation is good but nothing is good for our politicians who work only for their self interest and do nothing worthy for our people or country.
