SLC believes national team heading ’’in the right direction’’

Despite last Sunday's crushing defeat to India in the final of the Asia Cup, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) believes the national team is heading "in the right direction".

Following the defeat, SLC conducted a special meeting, where members of the Executive Committee, Head Coach Chris Silverwood, Consultant Coach Mahela Jayawardena, Team Manager Mahinda Halangoda and members of the national selection committee agreed that the team was "in the right direction towards making progress".
There was also optimism that the team could "bring glory to the nation" at the upcoming World Cup.

It is a sentiment that those outside SLC could find debatable, given the nature of Sri Lanka’s defeat to India, with calls for captain Dasun Shanaka to be axed and dropped for the Cricket World Cup, after his long run of poor form.

The all-rounder averages just over nine runs an innings in his last 21 matches – a dip in form that has magnified by him not contributing much with the ball either.

However, SLC confirmed on Wednesday that Shanaka would travel with the team to India for next month’s cricket World Cup, buying him time to reverse his bad run with the bat. (Shehan Daniel)

This is absolutely correct. that we are moving in the right direction. Hence to get in we needed to qualify. The direction could be that we go out in the first phase. If England could drop Jason Roy surely Dansun who says himself that he is in the team for his captaincy not as an individual who contributes could easily be axed. We can have a non-playing captain like in Golf and control the game from dressing room. His captaincy was evident in the Asia Cup final in choosing to bat under conditions that even a layman to the game would have known. Sad politics governs sport not performance.

SLC increased the number of First Division Teams to 26 to get more votes making the standard of First Class Competition very low. SLC does not spend its money to provide adequate facilities for cricketers and improve the game and as a result, the standard of Sri Lankan cricket has deteriorated.

By playing against weaker opposition mostly under home conditions on doctored wickets like the Galle Cricket Grounds and then boasting about winning 13 consecutive matches in a row is not going to help Sri Lanka cricket. After being bowled out fo a paltry 50 runs against india in the Asia Cup there could be further disaster to follow against stiffer opposition in the ODI World Cup in India next month.

Sri Lanka only won World Cups in 1996 (ODI World Cup) and 2014 (T20 World Cup). After that and when the current corrupt and inept lot of Executives took over SLC, SL did not win any World Cup.

Winning the Asia Cup is not a big deal. Sri Lanka won the T20 World Cup in 2014 before these corrupt and inept Executives took over SLC.
