SJB PS member resigns following alleged insults by chairman

Colombo, Nov. 14 (Daily Mirror) - SJB councillor Nikini Ayodhya has decided to step down from politics, citing repeated alleged insults from Arachchikattuwa NPP Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman S.J.M. Jayaratne.

She said at a media conference held in Chilaw yesterday that she plans to submit her resignation to the Party Leader.

The conference was organised by the Local Government Women’s Forum. Ayodhya said she had been verbally insulted by the Chairman in his office on November 12, prompting her to file a police complaint. She said that the chairman further humiliated her on social media, leading to unbearable pressure and her decision to step down.

During the investigation, OIC N.U.W.K. Nelumdeniya of the Arachchikattuwa Police said that the complainant party was unwilling to reach a settlement. The case has been forwarded to the Mediation Board, with the next hearing scheduled for November 16.

“This is a difficult situation for a young 23-year-old woman in local politics. Violence and harassment against women have no place in public office. We urge the authorities to take legal action. Otherwise, women across the country, regardless of party affiliation, will unite in protest against such acts,” Devi Fernando, chairperson of the Local Government Women’s Forum said addressing the media conference.

A large number of opposition MPs and representatives from local government institutions in the Puttalam district attended the event and voiced their support.

NPP must probe this allegation and should determine whether there is any harassment against this young member of the council irrespective of her party . If the complaint is true , then party should act against the NPP member.

From the news report it appears that the Police investigators are convinced that an offence has been committed by the Chairman and that is why it was referred to Mediation. I hope it will not settle at Mediation unless a Public apology is tendered. Any failure to settle will result in the issue returning to court

Some bad apples is not a surprise but an independent inquiry should be held and the NPP should take action if the chairman is guilty of these allegations.

Very poor of police to request the complainant party to go for a settlement. IGP, from when your police officers became judges. The allegations are serious enough for arrest and then take to courts. It appears police officers are afraid to offend NPP IGP, IGP, police are a concern to this country..
