Colombo, October 22 (Daily Mirror)- The Supreme Court today ordered three police officers attached to the Alawwa Police Station to pay Rs. 75,000 in compensation to a media professional who was subjected to torture and degrading treatment in 2021.

The three officers were ordered to pay the said amount from their personal funds.

Meanwhile, a three-judge bench of the Supreme Court, comprising Chief Justice Preethi Padman Surasena, Priyantha Fernando and Sampath Abayakoon, ordered the Attorney General to conduct a criminal investigation into the incident and consider instituting criminal proceedings against the respondent officers.

The petitioner, Thilina Rajapaksha, was an executive presenter/producer at a private radio station. He faced this incident on 1 March 2021, when he left his hometown of Polgahawela to return to Colombo on his motorcycle and, upon approaching the Walakumbura-Alawwa area, was intercepted.
