A fine of Rs. 52 million has been imposed on those who were caught with bottles of liquor with fake security stickers, State Minister of Finance Ranjith Siyambalapitiya said today.

He told Parliament that steps would also be taken to cancel their permits if the fines were not paid by 12 noon today.

The Minister said nearly 100,000 bottles of liquor with fake safety stickers, including 43,776 quarter bottles (180 ml) have been seized so far. (Ajith Siriwardana and Yohan Perera)

Siyambalapitiya, if you don't reduce the prices of Liquor by 50% you will lose revenue on Liquor sales as plenty of illicit liquor is sold outside wine shops. May be in due course every wine shop will sell illicit liquor. Please act fast on this issue.

Listen to your Diyana (State Minister) and reduce the prices of Liquor. If not, your sales on Liquor will be reduced and liquor shops will be closed. You will not stop fake stickers on bottles.

The real culprits are those who procured these stickers from an Indian Company without giving tender to one who was proficient in printing stickers with safeguards on faking. Then nothing would have happened - see the expenses involved - excise dept staff time, loss of govt revenue and other incidentals. They should prosecute the procurement staff and they be fined the loss.
