Colombo, Nov. 15 (Daily Mirror) - The Government has allocated Rs. 1 million to every District Secretariat and Divisional Secretariat across the country as part of the ‘Praja Shakthi’ National Programme aimed at modernising public administration.
In a statement, the President’s Office said the funds will be used to procure essential information technology hardware and services — including laptops, computers and related equipment — and to strengthen the digital capacity of public sector officers.
The initiative aligns with the government’s broader objective of overhauling the public service to deliver faster, more efficient and higher-quality services. Ongoing efforts are focused on shifting state institutions from outdated systems to modern, technology-driven operations.
The government also plans to gradually expand digital transformation efforts across all public institutions nationwide, ensuring that the benefits of modernisation extend beyond Colombo.
As part of this drive, the ‘Praja Shakthi’ programme, in collaboration with the Ministry of Digital Economy, has allocated a total of Rs. 369 million to upgrade district and regional administrative structures. This marks the first time direct funds have been channelled specifically toward enhancing regional IT capabilities.
The government further noted that it intends to increase direct investments in digital infrastructure within state institutions and allocate dedicated annual funding through future national budgets.
