Rising Kelani river could disrupt Western Province water supply

Colombo, Nov.29 (Daily Mirror) - The National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB) has warned that water supply in the Western Province could be disrupted if the Ambathale Water Treatment Plant (WTP) is affected by rising Kelani River levels.

NWSDB Chairman Eng. A.M.P.C.T. Bandara said that heavy floods across the country have forced several water resources and treatment plants to halt operations as floodwaters enter facilities, preventing normal operation of treatment plants and pump houses.

The Irrigation Department has forecast further increases in water levels today. If the Ambathale WTP is flooded, the Western Province may face a suspension of its water supply.

Authorities are urging residents to store as much drinking water as possible to mitigate potential shortages.
