Retired Army Brigadier arrested over housing scam

Colombo, March 23 (Daily Mirror) - A retired Brigadier of the Sri Lanka Army, who served as Project Director of the Urban Development Authority’s Colombo Urban Regeneration Project, has been arrested by officers of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption over allegations of corruption.

According to the Commission, the suspect is accused of facilitating the improper allocation of 22 housing units at the Sirisanda Sevana Housing Complex in 2014. The apartments were part of a Cabinet-approved initiative aimed at improving living conditions for low-income residents in Colombo.

Investigations revealed that the housing units had been granted to individuals who did not meet the required eligibility criteria. The allocations were reportedly made outside the established policy framework, despite having received approval from the Urban Development Authority’s Board of Directors.

The suspect was produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court. He was subsequently released on bail pending further legal proceedings.
