Reserve day for India-Pakistan a unanimous decision: Tournament Director

The decision to allocate a reserve day only for Sunday's India-Pakistan Asia Cup Super 4 match was taken unanimously since it was deemed financially beneficial for all teams, the Tournament's Director Ravin Wickramaratne told the Daily Mirror.

With the threat of rain looming large over the remaining matches of the Asia Cup, organisers announced that Sunday's match would continue onto the following day in the event there is a washout -- a contentious decision, given that it could have implications on the final points standing and determining the tournament’s finalists.

The group stage match between the two teams in Pallekele was washed out after one innings.

"All boards agreed to a reserve day on account of the potential revenue that can be gained from a full India-Pakistan match and the benefit of that for all boards from sharing that revenue," Asia Cup Tournament Director Ravin Wickramaratne told the Daily Mirror.

Sri Lanka Head Coach Chris Silverwood, though alluding to the disadvantage other teams could face, said it was not a concern.

"A little surprised when I first heard. But at the same time, we are not organising the competition so there is nothing much we can do about that. And I only see it becoming a problem if the reserve day then provides points that affect somebody else in the group," Silverwood said in the lead up to today's match against Bangladesh.
