Remove MPs parliamentary privileges to prevent them from lying: Namal

Colombo, Feb 28 (Daily Mirror) - SLPP MP Namal Rajapaksa today proposed to remove the privilge of MPs to tell lies in Parliament just like the removal of MPs' permits and insurance.

He told parliament that MPs tell various lies referring to people inside and outside Parliament and questioned why MPs tell lies while hiding behind parliamentary privilges and mislead the people.

The MP said the Committee on Privileges must be vested with more powers to act upon those who tell lies, hiding behind parliamentary privileges.

"We will bring it as a Private Member's Bill or we like to request the government to do it. Otherswise, the Committee on Privileges must be empowered to act upon incident of lying in Parliament. At leat provisions must be made to file a civil case. It is better if we can allow filing criminal defemation. But, most MPs will not approve it," he said.
