Colombo, Feb 27 (Daily Mirror) - Rats were found on board a SriLankan Airlines aircraft on Sunday, forcing the authorities to delay flight, SriLankan Airlines Chairman Ashok Pathirage said yesterday.
“We had to spray a chemical to an aircraft in which rats were found and ground it for one day as per the international standards,” Mr. Pathirage told a discussion which was held at Ports, Shipping and Aviation Ministry.
Two other aircraft had to be delayed due to technical defects,” he added.
Minister of Ports, Shipping and Aviation Nimal Siripala then questioned as to whether any investigation was done to determine as to how the animals managed to creep into the aircraft.
It was also revealed that the absence of 15 ground handling staff also caused the delay. Three members of staff have applied for leave on Sunday, while the remaining 12 have kept away from work casually. “Sack those who kept away from work without applying for leave,” the angry minister said.
Mr. Pathirage said there are only 20 aircraft in the Srilankan Airlines fleet while three aircraft have been grounded. “We are to purchase five A 330 Aircraft, but that has become an issue with the global demand for airlines and because of Sri Lanka’s economic situation,” he said.

Since Emirates handed over management and sold its shares, I have not flown with Sri Lanka. In all the years since then, my decision has been confirmed again and again. In addition, SriLankan's prices are much higher than comparable flights from other airlines. A German friend and Sri Lankan pilot even warned me not to fly with this airline because the technical condition of the aircrafts is often precarious. He himself refused to fly several times due to the inadequate technical condition of the aircraft. His professional knowledge comes from the fact that he acquired a diploma in aircraft technology with the German Lufthansa before his pilot career. Shut down the airline, Sri Lanka doesn't need its own. Good pilots and flight attendants are sought after all over the world and can quickly find a new, better-paid job.

Such a sad situation for our national carrier. Years ago when it was Air Lanka,and run by competant management,Air Lanka won global awards for its inflight services. And its catering arm Air Lanka Catering Services also won global awards for the excellent food supplied to all flights touching down in Katunayake.This was when it was run with Thai collaboration.

As much as the country was ruined by the R family, this airline which earned profits when managed by emirates was also ruined due personal anger of MR. Then they appointed his BIL and stole and further ruined it. They set up Mihin Air and stole from that two. So sad.

The airline and airport authority have gone to very low standards. The checking counter staff have no knowledge about their jobs, crew are complacent. I experienced this when I was in SL. There has to be a complete overhaul from top to bottom! A foreign take over is the only hope of turning it around, or tourism will decline. Well done to the Minister

Tickets from Colombo to London cost more on UL compared to EK/QR/EY. How on earth are they charging so much when they offer such a s*** service. No wonder there are rats on board!
