RTIC warns staffing shortages and media misreporting undermine its functions

Colombo, Nov. 21 (Daily Mirror) - The Right to Information Commission of Sri Lanka (RTIC) has expressed serious concern over chronic understaffing, delays in recruitment, and recent media misreporting, which it says undermines its quasi-judicial functions.

In a statement, the RTIC said that prolonged vacancies and slow hiring processes have affected its ability to process information requests efficiently and maintain timely hearings. The Commission highlighted that these challenges directly impact citizens’ access to information and weaken public trust in the institution.

The RTIC also raised concerns about inaccurate reporting in certain media outlets, which, it said, misrepresents the Commission’s decisions and procedures. “Such reporting not only confuses the public but also threatens the credibility and independence of the RTIC,” the statement said.

Officials called on the government to expedite recruitment and provide sufficient resources to ensure the Commission can perform its duties effectively. They also urged media organisations to adhere to accurate reporting standards when covering RTIC-related matters.

The Commission, which operates as a quasi-judicial body under the Right to Information Act, is tasked with reviewing appeals, resolving complaints, and safeguarding citizens’ rights to access public information.
