Public servants nominated as candidates for local polls will be reinstated in their original state offices: PM

All public servants who were nominated as candidates for the local government elections will be reinstated at state office branches in which they originally were before they handed over their nominations, Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardene informed Parliament today.

“We have decided to mete out justice to those state workers who were nominated for the local polls. Therefore, we have decided to place them in offices which they were working in prior to their nominations,” the Premier told the Opposition Leader.

Meanwhile, State Minister Janaka Wakkumbura said those state workers who want to withdraw from the elections will be allowed to do so.

“We will bring in all amendments to the Local Government Election Ordinance to enable those who want to withdraw to do so,” he said. (Yohan Perera)
