Colombo (Daily Mirror) - The Government is exploring the option of providing Rs 5,000 of the proposed pay increase of Rs. 10,000 from January 2024, followed by the balance from April.

Discussions were held regarding this during a recent meeting of the State Revenue Unit chaired by President Ranil Wickremesinghe.

The discussions were based on the figures presented in the 2023 expected financial report of the State Revenue Unit from the President's Office, which indicated that the salary increase can be feasibly implemented as early as January.

Accordingly, starting from January, government employees can expect a raise of Rs. 5,000, while pensioners will receive a full increase of Rs. 2,500.

During the budget speech, it was announced that government employees would receive a cost of living allowance of Rs. 10,000 in two instalments, with Rs. 5,000 in April and the balance Rs. 5,000 in October. Pensioners, on the other hand, will receive a lump sum increase of Rs. 2,500 in April 2024.

They will increase salary with this but all electricity: Gas and water and food bills will give double time high. Consider the worth 10.000 rupees five years ago and now . Inflation has gone up and up and price are many times high ..25 000 increase is not enough

Good move to pay 5000 from January very something for the people at extreme difficult times atleast can cover water bill.also 5% witholding tax refund for senior citizens FD Banks say circular not received by them to release refund amount certificate as at now.Is it a Govts false promise? nearly say 2 months or more and we are waiting to get this very small amount

It’s a good move, but ensure that the public sector works 8 hours a day and efficiently. Bribery and corruption should come down to zero level.Keep in mind that the entire economic crisis was caused by the public sector, the rulers and politicians included

Election year - hence the plan is to pay them as soon as possible. Money is good, but let us not vote for those ruined our country.

Private sector people are working and pay taxes and government servants are taking salary increments by taxing working private sector employees. Why should we pay taxes ?

Please don’t fell on traps set by unelected master debating president. We need to use our invaluable vote for the future of our country. Not for these crooks who bankrupt the country. So we need to elect individuals who are educated charismatic young who are coming from all part of the country including minorities. The time has come to elect minority president and prime minister. We don’t need to worry master debating president or family crooks who run the country.

Salaries of public sector should not be increased. They are also culprits for the bankruptcy of this country. Today the biggest sufferers are the private sector working hard and paying taxes.

    Jayantha Saturday, 25 November 2023 09:53 PM

Do not pay a single rupee as taxes. Pvt sector should get together and say we will not pay any tax if public sector salaries are raised. RW is a fool and he thinks by increasing salaries these government crooks will vote him. Those guys will never vote for him. Lol

Wasting tax payers money nicely. What a joke the imf became. Future government should take imf to an international court for aiding and funding corruption. Imf and even icc are the most corrupt international organizations

Sri Lankan Public can't fool any more with these types of election bribe to get votes any more , since people are now learned their mistake by electing those selfish politicians as their representatives in the parliament . Now they know who to be elected as their representatives in the house next Parliament . That is those who proved by themselves with their actions , who have Integrity , accountability, respect , trust and service to people of Sri Lanka . Therefore all of those who are responsible for the current economic failures and also who have already proved with the guilty verdict by the supreme court that who are most responsible for the economic failures , never be re elected to govern Sri Lanka for ever .

Reducing expenditure is one step for a good budget. Increasing revenue is another method for it. Recently there was a suggestion to increase Kitul products. Why not explore this venue. It may be 100% useful, help reduce sugar bill, improve self-employment opportunities. Win-win way.

It's paid by your tax money. They deserve it this time though. Let's hope they will offer a better service for public from now on.

How sick is this Ranil government!!! Pay government employees working in secure, well-paid jobs an additional "bonus" to cover the cost of living and millions of families with children live below the subsistence level!!! Children go to preschools and schools hungry, families go without meals that would be necessary!!! Many families don't have enough money to pay for their children's schooling!!! What schizophrenia! Seniors receive an increase in their pensions that is not worth mentioning and social assistance for the poor remains at the lowest level!!! Anyone who doesn't recognize this as a clumsy election trick with manipulative intentions can no longer be helped!!! It remains to be hoped that Sri Lankans will all recognize this as an electoral maneuver and give this socially unjust government what it deserves, farewell!!! The new beginning after the election can only get better!!!

Value of rupee has decreased. Prices of all goods and services have increased. So, it is fair to increase the salary of Govt. servants to some extent. I don't know if 10000 is a bit too much.

A typical election "gundu". Every time there is an election round the corner, these offers are made to the gullible public. Unfortunately, all these long decades, the public fell for these sugar-coated traps. We can only hope a lesson has been learnt and people vote for the right candidates.

Whichever government comes into power , the public sector gains. Country shall remain a ‘third world country’.

    Thariq Sunday, 26 November 2023 01:39 PM

This godforsaken government! PAY 10,000 as an increase is good. But this is put as a burden to the private sector people working their socks off.. Has anyone even asked what does the government is doing with this APIT tax that they deduct from the Private Sector?

Hard truth Sunday, 26 November 2023 04:26 PM

Typical Sri Lankan method. Enjoy masses — this third power of third-world country.

    Gaston Sunday, 26 November 2023 06:10 PM

Yes. Scoop and scavenge Income Taxes from the hardworking Private sector and gift the loot to the useless Government Sector.

    Buddhist Sunday, 26 November 2023 06:14 PM

Yes, the public sector needs wage increases. However, why not reduce the cost of operating the government thereby reducing the taxes charged on products to offset those unwanted expenses of the Government? Why do we need such a large cabinet, why do we need such a number of State Ministers when we have civil servants to do their jobs, why pay so much to ex-presidents? Why should Ranil take 80 people to Dubai for a conference? The most important question is why should IMF give money to SL when the President is back again throwing money away for vanity?

    Abd Monday, 27 November 2023 06:55 AM

Dear public servants, this is just a bribe to you to cool down till election time and for to steal your vote, anyway this indicates, he seems ready to face election due to pressure from all quarters, though you seem have got something,in return, by increased VAT he is collecting more from you, relax another couple of months to see difference
