Public protests cannot be prevented through court orders or suppressive laws: AKD

Claiming that the government must stop tampering with the EPF and ETF funds of the working people, NPP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake said today that the government cannot prevent public protests against its injustice and unreasonable actions through court orders or suppressive laws.

Addressing a protest rally in Colombo, he said the government has no right to loot the funds of the working people and the NPP will not allow the government to go ahead with such moves.

“The EPF and ETF are the only sources of living for working people such as estate workers after their retirement. It is injustice and unreasonable to tamper with these funds. The government must stop such moves immediately. We will fight against such moves with the people. Public protests cannot be stopped by bringing in suppressive laws or obtaining court orders,” he said.

The MP said rulers have put the country into bankruptcy by looting and misusing public funds and wasting them on useless projects and added that the government was now planning to loot the funds of working people while those who led the country to bankruptcy were still at large.(Ajith Siriwardana)
