Provide special allowance to public servants: UNP

Colombo, Dec. 6 (Daily Mirror) - UNP Chairman Vajira Abeywardena today called for the payment of a special allowance to public servants, especially field officers, stating that such a thing is important at a time of a disaster.

Announcing of relief measures for affected Grama Seva divisions, providing interest-free bank loans and leasing concessions for businesses for six months, deciding on compensation for partially damaged houses,

setting of minimum and maximum compensation limits for fully damaged houses, providing financial assistance for rebuilding damaged housing walls, proportionate to the square footage and offering relief to farmers for crop damage, empowering Divisional Secretaries and Grama Niladharis to release sand from new deposits for rebuilding, in coordination with relevant agencies and relaxing restrictions on sand extraction and transport to avoid unnecessary legal disputes were some of the other proposals which Abeywardena came up with.

As usual, making noise which only distracts the government’s effort to provide relief in a systematic way. These “misfits” are jeopardising the recovery effort by bringing up unnecessary attention. We have seen how they ran the country in the past decades and nothing significant was planned or done for the country and citizens. If there was proper planning and accountability by these misfits who were elected to run the country in the past, the current disaster would have been properly handled by the current administration.
